Just before his death in July, Paul Reubens made a quick cameo in the new Hulu film Quiz Lady. Now, the film’s stars Sandra Oh and Awkwafina are opening up about what it was like to work with him and how it was bittersweet to be able to spend time with him before his passing.

Oh shared, “It’s so special that we were able to spend that time with him, and for what turned out to be his last film. But, oh boy, he came on the set and he was like, I don’t know… He just really, really brought it in and had such great spirit around it.” Awkwafina added, “That was one part of the script that … he was in it from the very, very beginning. That never changed, his cameo specifically.”

Reubens, best known for playing Pee-wee Herman, appears at the end of the film to meet the main character’s neighbor. She is a huge fan of Alan Cumming, who she mistakes Reubens for. Reubens ends up going along with it and even tries to imitate Cumming’s Scottish accent. The scene is very sweet and wraps up the kind of film Quiz Lady is, a comedy with a lot of heart.

Oh and Awkwafina play sisters who don’t always get along but come together to try to win a game show in hopes of rescuing their dog and getting rid of their mother’s debts.

After news broke that Reubens passed away, Oh shared a photo of behind-the-scenes of the film with Reubens and wrote, “❤️ to our beloved friend Paul [Reubens]. We were so so so lucky to have him, to know him and to share in the joy he brought to all. I think this was the 1st or 2nd day of filming. #quizlady @hulu Enjoy 💜💜💜.”

Quiz Lady is streaming on Hulu.
