What happened on Every Season of ‘Charlie’s Angels’?
Charlie’s Angels celebrates its 50th anniversary this year — and officially marks the milestone on Sept. 22 — so now is the perfect time to look back at the classic Aaron Spelling show and everything that happened throughout the show’s run until in ended in 1981. From the unforgettable Angels at the Charles Townsend Detective Agency Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith that started it all to the groundbreaking storylines that kept viewers coming back week after week, each season brought something special to the series.

Season 1 (1976-1977, 22 episodes)

Despite mixed reviews from critics, the first season of Charlie’s Angels skyrocketed in popularity among viewers and in the Nielsen ratings (it took the fifth spot that season). ABC debuted the series on Sept. 22, 1976, in its 10pm Wednesday time slot following the well-established Baretta. By November, over half of all viewers during its time slot were watching the series! The show instantly made stars out of Farrah Fawcett as Jill Munroe, Jaclyn Smith as Kelly Garrett and Kate Jackson as Sabrina Duncan — three private investigators who were brilliant, beautiful and worked for the never-seen Charles Townsend (voiced by John Forsythe). By the end of the season, the show earned critical acclaim and was nominated for three Emmys and three Golden Globes, and it also took home the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Overall New TV Program.
Season 2 (1977-1978, 24 episodes)

The crime-fighting trio reunited for a second season in 1977, but this time without Farrah Fawcett. With threats of litigation, an agreement was reached where Fawcett would make six guest appearances and Cheryl Ladd would take her place as Kris Munroe (Jill’s sister) when Jill left the agency to become a professional racecar driver. Despite her departure, the series remained in the top 5 shows of the year and even got a better time slot, moving to 9pm on Wednesdays, with Baretta now following. Ladd kept the role for the remainder of the series. This season began with the episode “Angels in Paradise,” where the Angels met their new partner Kris and were off once again, this time to Hawaii to save Charlie, who’s been kidnapped.
Season 3 (1978-1979, 22 episodes)

The third season continued the story of the Angels — bringing back Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd as the three leading ladies — and is known for being the only season that didn’t have a major cast change. This season saw Kris Munroe (Ladd) in a series of unfortunate events, most notably being hit by a car and suffering amnesia in “Angel on My Mind.” Just seven episodes later, she gets kidnapped, and the Angels work together to find her in “Angel in a Box.” Audiences were also treated to a handful of guest appearances, such as Dean Martin in the season premiere, “Angels in Vegas,” and even Farrah Fawcett reprising her character of Jill Munroe.
Season 4 (1979-1980, 25 episodes)

This season started without Sabrina, who left the Townsend Detective Agency and life as an Angel to enjoy “wedded bliss.” In reality, Kate Jackson had become increasingly dissatisfied with the quality of the scripts. When Jackson asked to be relieved of the remaining time on her contract, executive producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg accommodated (she went on to further fame with Scarecrow and Mrs. King). Shelley Hack replaced Jackson as Tiffany Welles, a recent graduate of the Boston Police Academy. Season 4 saw the return of criminal Frank Desmond, who seeks revenge on his jailer Kelly Garrett after being released from prison (“Avenging Angel”). This season also kept viewers on their toes with famous guest stars, including Kim Cattrall, who played Kelly’s best friend in “Angels at the Altar” and went on to star in the iconic series Sex and the City.
Season 5 (1980-1981, 16 episodes)

The final season of Charlie’s Angels saw the departure of Shelley Hack and the addition of Tanya Roberts as Julie Rogers, a streetwise fighter. The series was ultimately canceled due to low ratings, with Season 5 running from November 1980 to June 1981 and including only 16 episodes. In the final episode, Kelly (Jaclyn Smith) was rushed to the hospital after being shot in the head. Fellow Angels Kris (Cheryl Ladd) and Julie (Roberts), along with Bosley (David Doyle), spend the night by Kelly’s side as they reminisce about past cases in “Let Our Angel Live.” Kelly ultimately makes a recovery, ensuring a happy ending for the iconic series.
