Sophia Loren takes center stage tonight, starting with A Countess From Hong Kong (1967), the romantic comedy directed by Charlie Chaplin in his final film as a director. Loren plays a Russian countess who stows away in the cabin of a wealthy American diplomat, played by Marlon Brando, setting off a battle of wills. The movie is not as frequently discussed as some of Loren’s other classics, which makes it an especially interesting choice for this spotlight. It also stars Sydney Chaplin (Chaplin’s son), Tippi Hedren, Patrick Cargill, and Margaret Rutherford. The lineup continues with It Started in Naples (1960), Marriage Italian Style (1964), Ghosts — Italian Style (1967), and A Special Day (1977).

Starring Kay Francis
Beginning at 8 pm

Everett Collection
Kay Francis was one of the defining screen sophisticates of early ’30s Hollywood, and tonight’s lineup is a strong reminder of how effortlessly she could pull off an emotional performance. If there is one title to build the evening around, it is tonight’s first film, One Way Passage (1932), the beautiful and bittersweet romance she made with William Powell, following two doomed lovers on an ocean voyage. Even among a lineup full of great melodramas, this is the performance that shows why she was once one of Warner Bros.’ biggest female stars. Other Francis films airing tonight include Confession (1937), Give Me Your Heart (1936), Man Wanted (1932), My Bill (1938), and The Keyhole (1933).

TCM Spotlight: Deep in the Heart of Texas
Beginning at 8 pm

Everett Collection
Tonight’s Texas spotlight begins with two of the most moving films ever made about ordinary people trying to hold onto dignity in difficult times. First is Places in the Heart (1984), with Sally Field giving a deeply felt performance as a widow fighting to keep her farm during the Depression. Then comes Tender Mercies (1983), the powerful drama that earned Robert Duvall an Oscar for his portrayal of a washed-up country singer searching for redemption. After those two films, the night continues with A Well Spent Life (1971), Written on the Wind (1956), Blossoms in the Dust (1941), and Boom Town (1940).

Riff Randell (P.J. Soles) meets her music idols, The Ramones in Rock ‘n’ Roll High School
Roger Corman made a career out of turning small budgets into big entertainment, and this 1979 film shows just how great he was at it. Executive produced by Corman, this chaotic teen comedy stars P.J. Soles as a rebellious student who declares war on her school’s strict new principal. The film also features the Ramones, whose music helps fuel the movie’s anarchic and punk spirit.

Murder has rarely been as funny as it is in tonight’s double feature, which begins with the classic dark comedy Arsenic and Old Lace (1944). Cary Grant gives one of his most memorable comic performances as a man who learns that the sweet elderly aunts who raised him have a shocking little secret: They have been poisoning lonely men as an act of charity. The night continues with Murder, He Says (1945), another comedy that finds humor in some very strange circumstances.
