Svengoolie’s September 2026 Schedule: ‘The Fly,’ ‘Night of the Living Dead’ & More

September starts with visitors from space and ends with the living dead trying to break into a farmhouse. In between, Svengoolie is serving up one of Vincent Price‘s most famous films and one of Don Knotts‘ most beloved comedies as an appetizer to the spooky season.

Svengoolie’s monthly picks air Saturdays from 8 to 10:30 pm ET on MeTV. Here is everything Svengoolie is showcasing in September.

September 5: They Came from Beyond Space (1967)

When a formation of strange meteorites lands in Cornwall, a group of scientists is sent to investigate. Dr. Curtis Temple (Robert Hutton) is forced to stay behind because he is recovering from a car accident. The meteorites contain alien beings capable of controlling humans, but the silver plate in Temple’s skull protects him from their power.

They Came from Beyond Space has everything you could want from a colorful 1960s British science-fiction movie, including mind-controlled scientists, a mysterious plague and even a trip to the moon. Freddie Francis directed the film, adapted from Joseph Millard’s novel The Gods Hate Kansas. Jennifer Jayne, Zia Mohyeddin and future Batman butler Michael Gough also star.

September 12: The Fly (1958)

Before Jeff Goldblum stepped into a telepod, David Hedison played the scientist whose experiment goes horribly wrong. André Delambre has created a machine that can transport matter from one place to another. When he tests it on himself, an unnoticed fly enters the chamber, and the machine mixes their atoms together.

Patricia Owens plays André’s wife, Hélène, while Vincent Price stars as his brother François. The movie begins with a shocking death and unfolds in flashback as Hélène explains how it happened. According to MeTV, Price and Herbert Marshall couldn’t stop laughing while filming the final unforgettable scene.

September 19: The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966)

If you’re like me and prefer a more comedic horror classic, this one is for you. The great Don Knotts stars as Luther Heggs, a nervous newspaper typesetter who dreams of becoming a reporter. His big opportunity comes when he is assigned to spend the night in the old Simmons mansion, where a murder and suicide occurred 20 years earlier. Luther encounters secret passages, a portrait that appears to bleed, and an organ with bloodstained keys that plays by itself.

The horror comedy was Knotts’ first movie under his Universal contract after he left The Andy Griffith Show. Joan Staley plays his love interest, Alma, and the supporting cast is packed with familiar television faces. The memorable score came from Vic Mizzy, who also wrote the themes for The Addams Family and Green Acres. According to TCM, Mizzy composed the score in just four days.

September 26: House of Svengoolie Presents Night of the Living Dead (1990)

The Sven Squad, which includes Sarah Palmer’s Gwengoolie, Scott Gryder’s IMP, and Bill Leff‘s Nostalgiaferatoo, will bring the scares and jokes as they host the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. Special-effects artist Tom Savini directed this color remake of George A. Romero‘s 1968 classic from a screenplay by Romero. Patricia Tallman stars as Barbara, who escapes a cemetery attack and takes refuge in an isolated farmhouse. Tony Todd plays Ben, while Tom Towles is Harry Cooper, the combative survivor who is certain the cellar is the safest place to hide. The growing crowd of zombies outside is dangerous, but the arguments inside the house may be just as deadly.
