Gilmore Girls star Scott Patterson shared why the show continues to “heal” fans decades later as they rewatch the beloved 2000s series.
During an October interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Patterson, 67 — who portrayed diner owner Luke Danes — opened up about the enduring popularity of Gilmore Girls. The series aired for seven seasons from 2000 to 2007, with a four-part Netflix miniseries revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, dropping in 2016.
“The medicinal and therapeutic effects this show has on people are extraordinary and it’s deep,” Patterson told the publication. “I don’t know if Amy [Sherman-Palladino, creator] wants to hear it, but this show saves people, and it saves them on a daily basis.”
He continued, “It soothes, heals and gives people hope there are better times ahead, that there were better times in the past and that we can have a better time in the present.”
The show starred Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as the fast-talking, mother-daughter duo, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. Ultimately, Lorelai ended up with the owner of Luke’s Diner — her quirky, bubbly personality contrasting with his gruff, tough-guy demeanor — having won him over after years of frequenting the restaurant for coffee.

“It doesn’t matter what I do the rest of my career, nothing’s gonna match that,” Patterson told THR of his backwards-hat-wearing Gilmore Girls character. “I know it, fans know it, I embrace it, and it’s a miracle that lightning ever struck once, right? And when it does, man, grab it, cause it ain’t gonna happen again. I’m just very grateful.”
Gilmore Girls also featured Kelly Bishop as Lorelai’s mother, Emily Gilmore, Edward Herrmann as her father, Richard Gilmore, and Melissa McCarthy as her best friend, Sookie St. James. Other memorable characters included Rory’s romantic partners, Dean (Jared Padalecki), Jess (Milo Ventimiglia), and Logan (Matt Czuchry), and BFF Lane (Keiko Agena). And of course, who could forget the eccentric townspeople, including Kirk (Sean Gunn), Babette (Sally Struthers), Taylor (Michael Winters), and Miss Patty (Liz Torres)?
