Paulina Porizkova Shares a Deeply Personal Post about Her Complicated Relationship with Ex Ric Ocasek
Former supermodel and one-time America’s Next Top Model host Paulina Porizkova shared an incredibly personal Instagram post on September 15, honoring her late ex-husband, Ric Ocasek, the former lead singer of The Cars, who passed away on that date in 2019.
The accompanying photo captured the couple in the early days of their romance. Porizkova and Ocasek first met in 1984 when she starred in the band’s music video for “You Might Think” in 1984, the hit that cemented The Cars’ status as one of MTV’s premier rock acts.
The two were married on August 23, 1989, when Porizkova was 24 and he was 44. They were together for almost 30 years before they announced that they would separate, but at the time of Ocasek’s passing, the couple were still living together and never formally divorced.
Accompanying the photo was a heartfelt caption that shared Porizkova’s thoughts.
“This photo captures one side of our relationship, one that was not visible to the public.
Even though he was 21 years older, and in many ways filled in for my parents during our 35 years, it was I who was sharply protective of HIM,” she wrote.

“I wanted to help him. I wanted to mend him. I wanted to heal the little scared boy in his heart, who he was so intent on protecting that he armored up against even me,” she continued. “I wanted to make him a better parent. But ultimately, what I wanted was to be loved by someone who resembled my parents.”
“He, in turn, wanted to be adored by someone of public value. He wanted to be loved by someone who would make him look good,” shared Porizkova. “It was [a] selfish kind of love for both of us. But it worked beautifully for a long time.”
“I like to think of it as our childhood scars being placed in such a way on our bodies that when we embraced, they fit perfectly. Today, I will be grateful for all the years we embraced in a perfect fit — whatever the reasons,” she concluded.
