At The Breakfast Club 40th anniversary reunion at Chicago’s C2E2 convention, the film’s complete living main cast —Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez and Anthony Michael Hall — got together live in public for the first time in 40 years, and answered many lingering fan questions about the 1985 teen classic. Among them: did gothy misfit Allison (Sheedy) look better before her controversial preppy makeover at the hands of Claire (Ringwald)?

The cast revealed that they were actually not fans of the makeover, either. “I just want to say that I’m not responsible for the makeover and I was really not happy with it,” said Ringwald. “I thought that it would have been better just to strip off all of the makeup, and just have Ally’s face fresh-scrubbed. Because it’s so beautiful. I didn’t like the way that they did her hair at the end, I was not responsible.”

Nelson added, “You know, those people online don’t understand that it’s explained in the scene: ‘why are you doing this?’ ‘Because you’re letting me.’ That’s why … Now the actress doesn’t always in their battles with the director … some battles, you fight, and you can be right, and still not win. This might have been one of those cases.”
