After 40 years, The Breakfast Club had its first-ever full reunion, when Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez and Anthony Michael Hall took the stage together at Chicago’s C2E2 convention. This is the first time Estevez has joined his other costars in speaking publicly about the film — and he shared some unique personal memories about his first time meeting the other cast members.

The first time the group got together, Estevez recalled, “John had organized a read-through at a hotel in Century City, and the night before, I had just had all four wisdom teeth pulled … and I was on pain pills. And my agent called and said, ‘Listen, they’re gonna do the read-through, it’s the rest of the cast, and you have to show up.’ And I said, ‘Look, my face is swollen, I’m on pain pills, I’m bleeding out!’ They said, ‘No, no, no, it’s really important, you have to be there. So I said, ‘Okay.'”

The puffy and pain-pill-filled Estevez showed up to the read-through, read with his castmates, “and at the end of the read-through — and I think that was the first time we had all met — at the end of the read-through, [director] John [Hughes] said, ‘I brought the first cut of my movie Sixteen Candles.’ … And he says, ‘I want to show it to you.’ And so we said, ‘Okay, great.’ And so he puts the film on, we’re sitting there, and I don’t think I made it through the opening credits. And I passed out. From the pain pills and just from the ordeal of having my teeth extracted. And I woke up at the end credits, and I looked at Judd, and Judd said, ‘I think you’re getting fired.'”

“And I believed it!” Estevez added with a laugh. “I thought, oh gosh, I just failed the final test here.” Estevez paid Nelson back later for the prank; upon completing filming, the pair watched a four-hour, unedited cut of the film. “I go, ‘They’re gonna cut it and put music in it, right?'” recalled Nelson. “And he goes, ‘No!’ And I go, ‘Really?’ And he goes, ‘You’re an idiot.'”
