December 8 marked the birthday of the legendary Sammy Davis Jr. Although Davis passed away at age 64 on May 16, 1990, after a long battle with cancer, those close to him still remember him each year — including Nancy Sinatra, daughter of fellow Rat Packer Frank Sinatra.

Frank Sinatra and Davis Jr. were two of the most famous members of the legendary crew, and often performed together. Their friendship broke boundaries during a time of racial segregation, truly inspiring fans and the public.

On what would have been Davis’ 99th birthday, Nancy shared several throwback photos of Davis Jr., alongside her father, and even herself — in one photo, she is shown giving him a kiss on the cheek while holding one of her albums.

“Please raise a glass to the legend, Sammy Davis, Jr. @officialsammydavisjr, on his birthday,” she wrote. “Sam was family. He and my dad were brothers and he was my uncle. I held his hand as he lay dying, yes we were that close. Sam was truly special and to say he was gifted is an understatement. He was one of a handful of entertainers who gave his all to his audience and now he is a shining star somewhere in the Universe. I miss you so much, Uncle Sam.”
