The game Oregon Trail first came out in 1971 and let users know a bit of what it was like to try to survive in pioneer times. In the game, you become a pioneer from 1847 and try to lead your family from Missouri to Oregon. The game retained its popularity through different versions from text to graphics, and I certainly remember trying not to die from dysentery while playing it in school in the early 2000s.

Now, a movie about the game is reportedly in the works from the men who created Blades of Glory: Will Speck and Josh Gordon. It is said to be an action/comedy and may even contain some musical numbers.

While the game was not very popular at first, it achieved a large following when schools began playing the game for learning purposes. The new announcement comes at a time when video game-inspired films are doing quite well in theaters, as evidenced by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. There are several other similar movies in the works, including A Minecraft Movie.

Composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, screenwriters Max Reisman and the Lucas Brothers, and producer Caroline Fraser are also attached to the film. What do you think of a movie based on the Oregon Trail? Would you watch it?

In case you miss the game and want to play, there are newer versions available on PS5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. You can also play a nostalgic version online for free here.
