Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced that it will be giving away a free, personalized copy of The Cat in the Hat to every baby born in the U.S. on Dr. Seuss Day, which is celebrated annually on March 2 to honor the late children’s author on his birthday. This year would have been Theodor “Ted” Seuss Geisel’s 120th birthday.

American author and illustrator Dr Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel, 1904 - 1991) sits at his drafting table in his home office with a copy of his book, 'The Cat in the Hat', La Jolla, California, April 25, 1957.

Dr. Seuss Day falls on the same day as Read Across America Day, established in 1998, also in an effort to promote reading from a young age.

Anyone with children born on March 2, 2024, has 90 days to go to SeussPledge.com and claim their baby’s free book. There are 10,000 books available, and it’s first-come, first-serve. Parents will have to provide proof of their child’s birth certificate to qualify.

“Helping ensure all children have easy access to books and literacy programs has always been one of Dr. Seuss’s core missions,” CEO & President of Dr. Seuss Enterprises Susan Brandt said in a release. “This pledge is an opportunity for us to honor this storied legacy and call attention to this noble cause.”

Due to some recent controversies, six Dr. Seuss books were pulled out of the Seuss collection, but many other titles are still available, like Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham and Oh, The Places You’ll Go! There have been several onscreen adaptations of Dr. Seuss’ magical worlds, including Netflix’s animated series Green Eggs and Ham as well as at least five versions of the Grinch and the 2012 film The Lorax.

There are also more reading resources for parents and teachers at Seussville.com.
