It is hard to believe that the beloved film Top Gun premiered 38 years ago. Its star, Tom Cruise, can’t believe it either. The 61-year-old shared some behind-the-scenes photos from the set of the first movie on Instagram to start a conversation with fans. He wrote, alongside the photos, “It’s incredible to look back on the thirty-eight years of Top Gun. To the fans who have been with us since the start, there wouldn’t be a Top Gun Day without you.”

The photos are bittersweet as they include a shot of the film’s director, Tony Scott, who passed away in 2012. Other photos show Cruise and the cast during the filming plus a newer photo of Cruise filming the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick.

Top Gun was released in theaters on May 16, 1986, and was a huge hit at the box office. It stars Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he attends the U.S. Navy’s Fighter Weapons School, also known as, you guessed it, Top Gun. Top Gun also stars Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards and Kelly McGillis. It was nominated for four Oscars and won the award for Best Original Song for the tune “Take My Breath Away.”

The 2022 sequel was highly-anticipated by fans and saw Maverick return to train new pilots including stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell. Cruise worked with Jerry Bruckheimer for the film and it did so well that they are in talks for a third film.

Bruckheimer confirmed, “We pitched Tom a story he liked. But he’s a very in-demand actor and he’s got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see.” Hopefully, another film will be in the works soon! Do you think there should be a third Top Gun film or did the story tie up nicely with two?
