New Edition of ‘Sound of Music’ Soundtrack Shares 40 Unreleased Songs

THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Julie Andrews, 1965
20th Century-Fox Film Corp./Everett Collection

It has been almost 60 years since The Sound of Music first debuted in theaters, starring the late Christoper Plummer and Julie Andrews. Fans were quickly drawn to the storyline and most of all, the music. Now, a new super-deluxe edition of the film’s soundtrack is being released on Dec. 1 and contains some incredible additions.

Not only does the box set contain the original, remastered versions of the 16 songs on the soundtrack but over 40 previously unreleased tracks including “The Little Dears” and “The Gazebo.” The new version also includes 11 never-before-heard alternate takes from the cast, so you can hear your favorite songs in a totally new way.

It sounds like a dream come true for fans, and the set includes new liner notes from director Robert Wise’s associate Mike Matessino. He remastered the soundtrack from the original tapes and wrote about the experience. He shared, “You will hear what you’ve heard before — famous songs with the mellifluous tones of Dame Julie Andrews leading the way — but the experience has been transformed beyond what the 1965 soundtrack album offered with extensions to the songs, a brilliantly arranged underscore, and even some segments not used in the completed version of the film.”

The news comes just over a year after many of the actors reunited when Andrews received the AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony in June 2022. Five of the actors who played the Von Trapp children (Nicholas Hammond, Duane Chase, Angela Cartwright, Debbie Turner, and Kym Karath) surprised Andrews during the ceremony. She admitted that the cast does keep in touch and checks in during birthdays and holidays.
