U2 Shares Touching Tribute to the Late Sinéad O’Connor

U2 has officially begun their highly-anticipated Las Vegas residency and they took some time out during a recent show to pay tribute to the late Sinéad O’Connor. O’Connor passed away in July at the age of 56. U2 performed part of O’Connor’s biggest hit song, 1990’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” during their Saturday show at the new Sphere venue.
During the performance of the band’s song “With or Without You,” Bono sang the finale verse “Nothing compares to you,” as he looked up toward the sky. The band previously spoke about their sadness surrounding their fellow Irish performer’s sudden passing.

They shared a photo of O’Connor on social media and quoted the lyrics of her song “Heroine” in the caption, “Touch these eyes with a broken smile, Touch my mouth with your furrowed brow, Lift my heart, heal my shame , Lead me into rest again .. Heroine.. Rest In Peace Sinéad.” Members of U2 also attended the ceremony where O’Connor was laid to rest on Aug. 8 in Ireland.
U2 began their Las Vegas residency at the brand-new venue on Friday. They are the first group to perform in the highly technical arena complete with a 6K wraparound LED screen and 167,000 speakers. Their Vegas show marks their first concert in four years and they performed 22 of their best hit songs including “One” and “Where the Streets Have No Name.” They also played their track “So Cruel” for the first time since the ’90s.

Not only did U2 pay tribute to O’Connor, but at one point images of Elvis Presley as well as other Las Vegas icons flashed across the stage and Bono said, “Elvis has definitely not left this building.”
