Creepiest & Grooviest Villains from ‘Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!’

SCOOBY DOO, WHERE ARE YOU?, Velma, Scooby Doo, Shaggy, Daphne, Fred, 1969-72
Everett Collection

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! brought beloved, scaredy-cat pup Scooby-Doo and his pals Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy (the start of Casey Kasem voicing the character for many years) to life. The series from Hanna-Barbera first premiered on Saturday morning September 13, 1969. While it only aired for three seasons, it started a popular franchise that now includes tons of shows, movies, and characters. Many fans not only love the core five who solve mysteries around the town of Coolsville but also the creepy and odd villains that would have gotten away with it if it hadn’t been for those darn kids and that dog too!

Let’s talk about the criminals in disguise who were always caught by the meddling kids and see if your favorite made the list!

The Black Knight

Who can forget the very first villain? The Black Knight appeared in the series premiere and came alive every full moon. He scared away visitors from the County Museum because he was trying to steal the art for his personal gain. When the gang unmasked the knight, he was museum curator Mr. Wickles.

Redbeard’s Ghost

Redbeard’s Ghost seemingly returned after 300 years to steal cargo from a ship. In the episode, things get a little dicey for the gang as Fred, Daphne, and Velma get captured while Scooby and Shaggy fall overboard. In the end, they find out that the ghost is actually the ship’s owner Magnus, and wanted to steal the cargo for the insurance money.

Miner 49’er

When the gang finds an old ghost town they also run into Miner 49’er, a ghost who is always looking for gold in the local mine. In the end, he turned out to be a man named Hank who was trying to scare everyone off to force his friend out of business.

The Creeper

One of the creepiest (ha ha) villains, he has a hunchback and a green face. He turned out to be a bank robber named Mr. Carswell trying to cover up his tracks.

The Tar Monster

Perhaps one of the grossest villains on this list, he was a cyclops made of tar that could swim through tar and make things extremely sticky for his victims. Allegedly, The Tar Monster has kidnapped a man named Stoner to steal some treasure but in the end, he is unmasked as Stoner himself.

Ghost of Captain Cutler

He is the ghost of a diver who died at sea but it turns out he is actually Captain Cutler. He never died and in fact, he faked his own death in order to steal yachts and scare away anyone from catching him.

Witch and the Zombie

It was always twice as scary when there were not just one, but two villains in an episode! In “Which Witch Is Which?” a Witch and a Zombie team up to rob an armored bank truck. They are unmasked as Zeb Perkins and his partner Zeke who live in town near the swamp.

Of course, as the seasons and franchise went on there have been tons of other villains and monsters, some extremely creepy while others a bit more humorous. In the end, the gang always succeeds and unmasks the bad guy with the help of Scooby Dooby Doo! Scooby-Doo has always been one of my favorite franchises and I must say I am particular to the 1969 cartoons. Let us know your favorite episodes, monsters, or characters! You can watch Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! currently on Boomerang Amazon Channel, Max Amazon Channel, Max, Boomerang, or for free with ads on Tubi TV.
