Turner Classic Movies Summer Under the Stars: Anthony Perkins
Summer Under the Stars (SUTS), Turner Classic Movies’ annual August programming favorite, returns August 2 celebrating Anthony Perkins.
While Anthony Perkins is justifiably remembered for his chilling performance as murderous mama’s boy Norman Bates in the 1960 thriller Psycho, too many may only know him from this. Perkins was equally skilled at drama; in his second film, Friendly Persuasion (1956), he received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination and the Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer — Male. The following year, he delivered a terrific performance as troubled baseball player Jim Piersall in the biopic Fear Strikes Out. The actor also excelled as a romantic lead, even if that casting was part of studios’ efforts to give him a more traditionally “masculine” image. Perkins, who was homosexual, advocated for causes like LGBTQ+ rights until his AIDS-related passing at age 60, in 1992; he was among those honored in the 1994 AIDS remembrance quilt.
