What To Know

  • Seth Green revealed he was originally cast in the 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie as a vampire.
  • Green had longstanding connections with Buffy stars Alyson Hannigan and Sarah Michelle.
  • He discussed his unique audition process for Oz.

Perhaps it was always prophesied that Seth Green was meant to be a resident of Sunnydale. It certainly seems that way.

Longtime fans of the actor who played Oz, the laid-back, guitar-playing werewolf and boyfriend of Alyson Hannigan‘s Willow on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, know their connection goes back much further than the Hellmouth. Years before they became one of the series’ most beloved couples, the duo shared the screen as children in the 1988 sci-fi comedy My Stepmother Is an Alien. Green also shared the screen with pre-Buffy Sarah Michelle Gellar on a 1985 Duncan Hines commercial.

For fans, these early pairings feel less like a coincidence and more like fate, but what many longtime Watchers may not realize is that Green technically entered the world of Buffy even earlier.

On the February 24 episode of Charisma Carpenter‘s podcast The B*tch Is Back!, Green joined the former Queen Bee of Sunnydale High, Cordelia Chase herself, as a guest. During the conversation, he reflected on his time on the iconic series, including how he first became part of the Buffyverse.

“I knew Sarah since we were kids. I knew Aly since we were kids. And so, the fact that they were doing a show together, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s fun. Look at the two of them.’ But I had done the movie too,” Green told Carpenter.

‘I didn’t know that,” exclaimed Carpenter. “Oh my god, you were in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer? How did I not know that?”

“Yeah, I’m in a scene with Paul Ruebens. It’s not a popular fact,” explained Green. “I got cut from the movie, but weirdly enough, I’m on the back of the DVD box. So they used the still of me and Sasha [Jenson]. I’m like biting [him], because I’m a vampire, with braces. It’s very silly.”

However, good things did come from his ill-fated debut in the Buffyverse.

“The scene got cut from the movie, but that is were I met Luke Perry, that is where I met Donald Sutherland…we worked on The Italian Job together, like 30 years later, but he didn’t remember,” recalled Green. ”

For his audition as Oz, Green shared that he tried to be a stereotypical ’90s musician and “as weird as possible,” according to the actor. “I tried to look like Michael Hutchence at the MTV Awards.” And the rest is history, as Green became Oz, returning to the franchise for a second bite.

The B*tch Is Back! episode dives deep into Green’s experiences during Buffy’s early seasons and the evolution of Oz. Listen to the full episode of The B*tch Is Back! on Patreon, available on Tuesday, February 24 at 8am/7c.
