What To Know

  • E!’s new docuseries Dirty Rotten Scandals will feature America’s Next Top Model alums who were not part of Netflix’s Reality Check.
  • The series exposes the exploitative and toxic environment behind reality TV shows.
  • Dirty Rotten Scandals will also cover other controversial shows like Dr. Phil and The Price Is Right in its run.

Netflix’s Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model placed America’s obsession with America’s Next Top Model under the microscope, exposing the toxic culture behind the glossy promise. Former contestants and judges came forward to discuss the reality of the process, reopening old wounds as they revisited issues including eating disorders, manufactured drama, sexual harassment and assault, and deeply problematic photo shoots that prioritized shock value over the well-being of the young women involved.

However, not every ATNM alum made it to the Netflix docuseries, as former winners and one former judge have made their way to another documentary series.

Premiering March 4 at 9/8c, E!’s Dirty Rotten Scandals is a new docuseries that explores the seedy underbelly of America’s obsession with reality television, taking a scathing look at shows like Dr. Phil, America’s Next Top Model, and The Price Is Right. From allegations of exploitation to sexual harassment lawsuits, former cast and crew speak out about their experiences behind the scenes, exposing the darker side of programs once marketed as entertainment. The first episode will focus on the legacy of Dr. Phil, examining both its cultural impact and the controversies that followed.

On March 11 at 9/8c, E!’s Dirty Rotten Scandal will place America’s Next Top Model in its crosshairs with two back-to-back episodes about the reality competition, but this one featuring former judge Janice Dickinson, Cycle 17 All Star winner Lisa D’Amato, and Cycle 8 winner Jaslene Gonzalez, to name a few.

According to Reality Check director Daniel Sivan recently told Tudum he would have loved to have interviewed Dickinson about her experiences, but she was apparently tied up with commitments to a different documentary. That docuseries will be making its debut soon, and Dickinson did not hold back.

America’s Next Top Model really tortured these girls for Tyra Banks‘ ego,” said outspoken former model and ANTM judge Dickinson. “The crazier the models were, the better ratings they got on television.

“They were really good at casting someone who was struggling with something,” said Gonzalez in a clip.

“It wasn’t a modeling competition. It was psychological warfare,” agrees D’Amato. Later, while looking at the camera, an upset D’Amato says: “I trusted you with my dreams. How dare you take my f**king life away from me,” an upset D’Amato says to the camera.”

D’Amato has criticized the show in the past, particularly producers Banks and Ken Mok, as a “cruel” and traumatic experience that exploited contestants and did not help them after the show.

Not all the ANTM faces are new to the doc scene. Cycle 4 finalist Keenyah Hill, whose harassment during a shoot was explored during Netflix’s Reality Check, is also in Scandals. “Tyra had the ability to make you or break you,” said Hill in the trailer.

The series will conclude on March 18 at 9/8c, with a deep dive into The Price Is Right and its late host Bob Barker.
