What Is Dr. Phil and Oprah’s Relationship Like Today?
What To Know
- Oprah Winfrey launched Dr. Phil’s television career after he assisted her in a 1996 libel trial.
- Dr. Phil’s show, initially focused on self-help, became controversial for allegedly exploiting vulnerable guests.
- Although they no longer collaborate professionally and have independent business interests, Dr. Phil and Oprah remain friends.
There are many legendary pairs in pop culture. Comedy gave us Martin and Lewis and Laurel and Hardy, while the comic book world delivered Batman and Robin and the Green Hornet and Kato. But in the realm of personal empowerment, life strategies, and wellness, few pairings have been more influential than Dr. Phil and Oprah Winfrey, a slightly symbiotic relationship built on televised therapy.
Their partnership did more than entertain. It turned private dysfunction into a daytime spectacle and proved that self-help could be packaged as ratings gold. But now, long after Oprah’s reign as the undisputed queen of daytime television and in the wake of Dr. Phil’s own media mayhem, the question remains: where does their relationship stand today? And does the mentor who made him still claim him as one of her greatest success stories or one of her most complicated legacies?

How did they meet?
Dr. Phil became an Oprah protege in 1996 when she hired his Texas-based legal consulting firm, CSI, to help her prep for a libel trial in 1996. At the time, Oprah was taken to court by the cattle industry after she claimed that mad cow disease prompted an $11 million downturn in the industry.
Oprah was not only vindicated, she was also immediately smitten with Dr. Phil, and invited him onto her program, where he became one of her most popular guests.

Thanks to his Southern charm and colorful catchphrases, Dr. Phil became a daytime sensation and launched his own show in 2002 under Oprah’s production company. It became a hit as his charism and no-nonsense attitude won over audiences interested in people searching for means to better themselves. However, over time, the show drew criticism for shifting from guidance to spectacle, often accused of exploiting vulnerable guests, especially those struggling with addiction.
Dr. Phil built his brand on blunt, pushing guests to “get real.” Critics, however, argued that tough love often crossed into public exposure, raising questions about whether the goal was help or ratings. Many have since widely criticized Dr. Phil for exploiting vulnerable guests for entertainment and providing unethical or unprofessional advice. Furthermore, many blame Oprah for launching his career through her show and production company, Harpo Productions, effectively “unleashing” him on the public.
In recent years, Dr. Phil has seemed to split with Oprah on more than just formats. Over the years, Dr. Phil seemed to have embraced more right-leaning values than his mentor Oprah, focusing on conservative-coded subjects on his show that appeal to fear-mongering against the “woke.”

As of late 2025, Dr. Phil McGraw has faced significant legal trouble regarding his media company, Merit Street Media, following allegations of a “bankruptcy scheme” and improper business dealings. A federal judge ordered the company to liquidate under Chapter 7. Orpah is not part of his recent financial woes, and the two have been independent business entities for many years.
Are Dr. Phil and Oprah still friends?
While they are not collaborating the way they once did, by all reliable accounts, Oprah and Dr. Phil have remained friends; they are just no longer closely tied professionally.
In 2022, Dr. Phil revealed that he writes Oprah a letter every year, thanking her for changing his life. “It’s just been really important to me, every year to stop, sit down and write her a letter, and say, ‘Thank you for the impact you’ve had on me and my family,'” Dr. Phil explained while he was on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “And I’ve done it every year for 25 or 26 years.”
“I’ve got this value, ‘Don’t forget who brung you to the dance,’” he stated. “And I’ve never let her think I forgot who brung me to the dance.”
