America’s Next Top Model winner Lisa D’Amato recently called out Tyra Banks over her upcoming documentary about the modeling competition series.
On February 16, Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model drops on Netflix. The three-part series promises to “expose the show’s complicated legacy.” However, D’Amato — a Cycle 5 competitor and the Cycle 17: All Stars winner — slammed the documentary as a “cash grab” by Banks , 52, and ANTM developer Ken Mok, 64.
“Tyra’s all about making money,” D’Amato, 45, claimed during an interview with Page Six published on February 12. “She doesn’t have any real empathy for anybody else but herself.”
“In order for her to save face to make more money in the future, she’s going to have to take a bit of accountability,” she added, speculating that Banks will be “forced” to take “about 5% accountability” in the documentary.
“Ultimately, my own intuition tells me from my own experience — which is very deep, and it’s been many years — that this is a money grab for Tyra and Ken Mok,” D’Amato told Page Six. “So they’re not 100% canceled.”
When she was asked if she thought any accountability from them would be “genuine,” D’Amato bluntly replied, “No. God, no! Tyra? Ken Mok neither.”
In late January, Netflix released a trailer for Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model. “I haven’t really said much,” Tyra declared. “But now it’s time,” after a clip of her screaming at a contestant played. Later, she admitted, “I know I went too far… It was very, very intense. But you guys were demanding it, and so we kept pushing more, and more, and more.”
America’s Next Top Model aired for 24 seasons from 2003 to 2016. In addition to Tyra as the head judge, the series starred Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, Janice Dickinson, Twiggy, and Kelly Cutrone as judges, among others.
