The Hemingway name brings to mind some very recognizable faces in American literature, ’70s modeling, and Oscar-nominated acting, and yes, Dree is part of the famous lineage.
Who are Dree Hemingway’s famous relatives?
Dree Louise Crisman Hemingway was born December 4, 1987, in Sun Valley, Idaho and is the daughter of actress Mariel Hemingway and Stephen Crisman. She grew up in Ketchum, Idaho, attended Oaks Christian High School in California for 2.5 years, and left school to pursue modeling. She made her runway debut in 2009 at Givenchy’s fall/winter show in Paris and went on to model for major fashion houses, including Chanel, Gucci, Valentino, and Jean Paul Gaultier. In film, she gained significant attention for her lead role in Starlet (2012) and later appeared in independent films such as Listen Up Philip and While We’re Young.

Her mother, Mariel Hemingway, became widely known in the late ’70s. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Manhattan in 1979, directed by Woody Allen. Before that, she starred in Lipstick in 1976 alongside her older sister, Margaux.
Dree’s aunt was Margaux Hemingway, one of the most recognizable models of the 1970s. In 1975, she signed a reported one-million-dollar contract with Fabergé for its Babe fragrance, which was widely noted at the time as unprecedented for a model. Margaux sadly died by suicide in 1996 at age 42. Dree was just eight years old at the time.
Mariel and Margaux’s father was Jack Hemingway, born John Hadley Nicanor Hemingway. He was the eldest son of author Ernest Hemingway and Hadley Richardson. Jack served in the U.S. Army during World War II and later worked as a writer and outdoorsman. He eventually settled in Idaho, further cementing the family’s long association with Sun Valley and Ketchum.
At the top of the family tree is Ernest Hemingway, Dree’s great-grandfather. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. His major works include A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls, and he remains one of the most studied American authors of the 20th century. He died in 1961 at age 61.
