Ironside was born Frederick Reginald Ironside on February 12, 1950, in Toronto, Ontario. Acting was not his first dream. As a teenager, he actually wanted to be a writer and even won awards for his early plays and poetry. He attended the Ontario College of Art and worked a variety of jobs, including construction and roofing, before finding his way into acting.
His breakthrough came in 1981 when he starred as the terrifying telepath Darryl Revok in David Cronenberg‘s cult classic Scanners. Throughout the decade, Ironside became a familiar face in action and sci-fi films, playing Overdog in Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone, Jester in Top Gun and the merciless henchman Richter in Total Recall.
Television audiences got to know him just as well. In 1984, Ironside appeared as resistance fighter Ham Tyler in the popular miniseries V: The Final Battle, a role he continued in the follow-up series. He later joined the cast of seaQuest DSV as Captain Oliver Hudson and made guest appearances on shows ranging from ER to Walker, Texas Ranger to Smallville.

Another major part of his legacy is his voice work. Ironside’s deep, commanding tone made him a natural fit for animation and video games. He famously voiced the DC Comics villain Darkseid in several animated series, including Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League. Gamers also know him as Sam Fisher in the popular Tom Clancy‘s Splinter Cell franchise.
In the late ’90s and 2000s, Ironside continued to work steadily. He reunited with director Paul Verhoeven for Starship Troopers, appeared in films like The Perfect Storm and The Machinist, and had a memorable role in Terminator Salvation. Television kept him busy as well, with appearances on Burn Notice, The Flash and the historical miniseries Tokyo Trial.
Where is Michael Ironside today?
More recently, Ironside has stayed active with character roles in both film and television. In 2021, he appeared in the action thriller Nobody, and in 2022, he played Don Lucas in the Hulu series The Dropout. His most recent credits are a 2023 episode of the HBO series Barry, and the narrator in 2023 indie horror hit Late Night with the Devil.
In a 2025 interview with JoBlo Horror, Ironside said, of his tendency to tackle a large number of roles, that “I pretty much will lend myself out to a situation, do the best I can, and move on.” He also said, though he is famous for genre films, “I just like well-written pieces of work…genre is marketing.”
Behind the scenes, Ironside has faced serious personal challenges. He has battled and survived several forms of cancer, including bowel, prostate and thyroid cancer. Through it all, he has remained relatively private. He has been married to his wife Karen since 1986, and the couple has a daughter together, along with another daughter from his previous marriage.
