Rob Reiner Tribute
Beginning at 8pm

Everett Collection
Turner Classic Movies will honor the life and work of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner with a special programming tribute celebrating his influential career. The movie marathon will begin with a premiere presentation of The Princess Bride, one of Reiner’s most beloved and enduring films, before continuing with a curated selection of his most beloved works, including When Harry Met Sally, Stand by Me and This Is Spinal Tap. “With This is Spinal Tap [1984], Rob began an extraordinary 11-year run that rivals the finest directors in Hollywood history: He made The Sure Thing, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, A Few Good Men and The American President,” said TCM host Ben Mankiewicz. “The profound sense of loss we’re all feeling is heightened by Rob’s lofty standing in Hollywood. He was universally loved inside the entertainment industry. I did not know him as well as I would have liked, but he always made me feel like we had been pals for decades. Rob’s character was defined by the qualities we see in those films: kindness, decency, humor, compassion and, most of all, a belief in humanity,” stated Mankiewicz.

Star of the Month: Jean Arthur
Beginning at 8pm

Everett Collection
Arthur began her career in silent films, but the films that made her a star involved speaking — a lot of speaking. Arthur was a comedy icon, known for her star turns in Frank Capra classics including Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and You Can’t Take It With You. She even received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for the 1944 comedy The More the Merrier.
But Arthur wasn’t only a comedic actress, as tonight’s lineup shows — she also knew her way around a Western. The evening starts with 1953’s Shane, Arthur’s final film — she had quit acting five years earlier, but was lured out of retirement by George Stevens to star alongside Alan Ladd in this tale of a mysterious drifter who protects the settlers of a Western town. Follow it up with Arthur’s other Westerns, including 1940’s Arizona, where she portrays a tough female homesteader who falls for William Holden.

Cooley High. Car Wash. Krush Groove. These are some of the films of influential director and producer Michael Schultz, a member of the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame, whose work is explored by TCM on this month’s first two Sundays. Known for comedies that also convey social commentary, Schultz had his first real commercial success in that format with Cooley High (1975), which begins tonight’s programming. The story chronicles the friendships and dreams of high school seniors living in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing project. The film’s influence has extended to other Black directors like Spike Lee, who placed it on his essential film list. The Library of Congress also weighed in on the movie’s importance, adding it to the National Film Registry.
