Many fans were toting iconic posters, glossies and rare merchandise seeking her autograph. How Julie Newmar became Catwoman
Throughout her career, Newmar’s statuesque form and height (5’11”) made her a larger-than-life sex symbol, and she was often cast as a temptress or Amazonian beauty — and her recurring role in the 1960s television series Batman as Catwoman solidified her as a legend.

Newmar’s debut role on Batman was in the Season 2 episode “Better Luck Next Time” (March 1966). Fans will remember that Lee Meriwether played Catwoman in the 1966 feature film “due to Newmar being unaware that a film was going to be made, and being already signed onto an adaptation of Monsieur Lecoq that never got made,” her personal bio states. Clearly other iconic Catwoman would follow, like Eartha Kitt, who portrayed Catwoman in the series’ final season while Newmar was busy making the film Mackenna’s Gold, which was shot during the filming of the final season, but not released until 1969. But it is Newmar who will forever hold the title of the first Catwoman.

Newmar modified her Catwoman costume, which appears above in the poster she she signed for a fan, during her Batman run. She placed the belt at the hips instead of the waist to emphasize her hourglass figure.
Her Catwoman costume is now in the Smithsonian.
