Maury Povich recently confessed that his talk show, Maury, would never work today.
In a trailer for the three-part ABC series Dirty Talk: When Daytime Talk Shows Ruled TV, the former host, 86, was featured alongside other iconic daytime talk show hosts.
“Remember when Daytime television was, well, let’s just say a little over the top?” Maury said in the opening voiceover.
A clip of audience members on The Jerry Springer Show chanting, “Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!” was then played, followed by Sally Jessy Raphael shouting, “Wipe that smile off your face, now!” on Sally. Next, Povich announced, “You are NOT the father!” in an old video from the talk show.
That’s when the scene cut to Maury today, as he admitted, “I couldn’t do that show today. There’s no way.”
The rest of the trailer featured fights breaking out on the stages of various talk shows, as well as other memorable moments — like when Oprah Winfrey hauled out a wagon of fat on The Oprah Winfrey Show as a visual representation of her 67-pound weight loss.
Additionally, the trailer highlighted the time host Geraldo Rivera suffered a broken nose after a brawl broke out on The Geraldo Rivera Show in 1988.
“The more controversial, the better,” Raphael pointed out.
The Montel Williams Show and Ricki Lake are two other talk shows featured in the three-part special.
In addition to Povich, other individuals featured in Dirty Talk include, per People: Leeza Gibbons, John Henson, Ricki Lake creator Garth Ancier, Sally and Jerry Springer creator Burt Dubrow, Geraldo executive producer Marty Berman, and former bodyguard on The Jerry Springer Show Steve Wilkos.
