The Blue Lagoon star Christopher Atkins recently revealed that he underwent surgery, as fans sent prayers for a smooth recovery.

On Wednesday, January 7, Atkins — who played Richard in the 1980 film alongside Brooke Shields‘ Emmeline — took to Instagram with an unexpected health update.

“Surgery went well,” Atkins, 64, captioned his update, alongside a photo of himself giving a thumbs-up in an arm sling. “Got more metal in me. I’ll need to get to airports even earlier to get through security! Lol. Thanks for all your well wishes! Love you!”

In response to a question from an Instagram follower about the reason for the surgery, the actor replied, “Thousands of baseballs, footballs, and casting for fish! Sports as a kid catching up with me.” He clarified in a comment to someone else, “Got a new metal elbow.”

When filming began for Blue Lagoon, Shields was only 14, while Atkins was 18, prompting criticism over the film. In 1991, the sequel Return to Blue Lagoon premiered, following a similar storyline involving adopted siblings and starring Brian Krause and Milla Jovovich.
