What To Know

  • Bill Nye continues to lead the Planetary Society as CEO, advocating for space exploration.
  • He remains active in media, starring in science-focused shows while making guest appearances on various popular TV programs.
  • Nye has become a prominent science advocate, speaking out on climate policy and education.

Bill Nye turns 70 on November 27, 2025, and that may be a shock to us ’90s kids who remember the excitement of the TV being wheeled into the classroom and the catchy theme song playing, with all of us yelling, “Bill! Bill! Bill!”

Nye is best known as Bill Nye the Science Guy, whose show helped children learn science in a fun way. While he is now approaching his 70s, he has never slowed down and has continued to learn and teach in the field of science. So, what is he doing these days?

Nye still leads The Planetary Society, the space-advocacy nonprofit co-founded by Carl Sagan. According to the organization, he has served as CEO since 2010 and remains one of the most prominent voices pushing for strong investment in space exploration. Under his leadership, the group has championed missions like the LightSail program, which successfully demonstrated solar-sailing technology in orbit.

On the entertainment side, Nye has maintained a steady presence on TV and streaming platforms. In 2022, he starred in the Peacock and Syfy series The End Is Nye, where he walked audiences through large-scale natural and human-made disasters and explained how science can help us survive and prepare for them. Before that, he hosted Netflix’s Bill Nye Saves the World, which explored how scientific issues intersect with everyday life and ran for three seasons from 2017 to 2018. He has also popped up on shows like Dancing with the Stars, The Masked Singer, The Big Bang Theory, Inside Amy Schumer, Stargate Atlantis, and Blindspot, usually playing some version of himself. One of his newer guest spots is in the show High Potential.

Nye has also become more outspoken about policy in recent years. He regularly comments on climate science on social media and in interviews and has appeared in documentaries and public debates defending science education and evolution. According to ABC News, Nye recently spoke out about proposed NASA budget cuts and said, “We’re not talking about delays in scientific exploration, we’re talking about the end of it. While we’re checking out, our competitors are checking in.”

Nye has written several books for adults, including Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation, Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World, and Everything All at Once: How to Unleash Your Inner Nerd, Tap into Radical Curiosity and Solve Any Problem. He has also co-written a middle-grade adventure series, Jack and the Geniuses, and continued to place his name on kid-friendly science books like Bill Nye’s Great Big World of Science.

In 2017, he was the subject of the documentary Bill Nye: Science Guy, which followed his work as an educator and activist. The film premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival. Around that same time, he also served as an honorary co-chair of the March for Science in Washington, D.C. He continued to attend events and panels focused on climate change and space exploration, hoping to get everyone on the same page for the future.

His recent years have also come with some tremendous honors. On January 4, 2025, Nye received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, in a White House ceremony recognizing his decades of work popularizing science and inspiring young people. Later in 2025, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the television category, a full-circle moment for Nye and all of his longtime fans.
