Best Classic Movies on TV This Week: November 24-November 30
Each week, thousands of great movies air on cable TV and over-the-air antenna channels. Your favorite might be among them … but all too often, you only realize it’s playing when most of the film is already over. Our day-by-day guide to classic movies on TV this week will help you plan your viewing during primetime and beyond, and keep an eye out for your faves, as well as those movies you always meant to see.
This holiday week is full of beloved family classics, like a 60th anniversary screening of The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Laurel and Hardy’s March of the Wooden Soldiers, The Shop Around the Corner, and more modern fare like Back to the Future, Home Alone, Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back.
If you’re looking for something with a little more bite, TCM will be showing All the President’s Men and The China Syndrome as part of their tribute to political thrillers; they’ll also be airing a tribute to Diane Ladd which will include Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore and Rambling Rose. You can also catch Harrison Ford’s Patriot Game, Assault on Precinct 13, For a Few Dollars More, Dog Day Afternoon, The Godfather, Indecent Proposal, Cujo, Night of the Hunter, Dangerous Liaisons, and the Academy Award-winning 2000 hit, Gladiator, among many, many others.

The Sound of Music 60th Anniversary
AMC, 7 pm

20th Century-Fox Film Corp./Everett Collection
One year after playing Mary Poppins, the most beloved singing nanny in Hollywood history, Julie Andrews took on another such character — with equally impressive results. In The Sound of Music, Robert Wise’s 1965 musical drama, Andrews is Maria, a nun sent to care for the seven children of the widowed and strict Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), who soon swoons over Maria and marries her. The film, based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway hit, follows the von Trapps in their attempt to flee Austria on the eve of World War II, and features treasured songs including “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi” and “Edelweiss.”

TCM Star of the Month: Rock Hudson
TCM, beginning at 8pm

Everett Collection
Hepburn and Tracy, Taylor and Burton, and Bogart and Bacall might reside higher up in the pantheon of classic Hollywood pairings, but they can’t compete with the simple joy of Rock Hudson and Doris Day as Manhattan sophisticates (Broadway producer and interior decorator in 1959’s Pillow Talk, and both ad execs in 1961’s Lover Come Back) dancing around each other first as bickering foes, then, after backing off to their own corners, realizing they are made for each other. Pillow Talk was a box office smash (and shot in gorgeous CinemaScope) and Lover Come Back was another sensational pairing that immediately follows tonight. Send Me No Flowers, their third and final picture together, was their zaniest. All three benefited from their outstanding costar Tony Randall.

TCM Spotlight: Conspiracy and Political Thrillers
TCM, beginning at 8pm

Everett Collection
If you missed TCM’s Nov. 2 daylong, 11-movie tribute to screen icon Robert Redford, who passed away on Sept. 16, you can still catch one of his most popular films tonight, 1976’s All the President’s Men. As part of the evening’s spotlight on political thrillers, which also includes Jack Lemmon and Jane Fonda in The China Syndrome (1979) and Kevin Costner in No Way Out (1987), Redford plays Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward, opposite Dustin Hoffman’s Carl Bernstein, who broke the Watergate scandal that eventually brought down President Richard Nixon.

Thanksgiving MOVIES!
MOVIES!, beginning at 6am

Everett Collection
Wake up early and revisit the Thanksgiving days of one’s youth, thanks to feel-good films that always seemed to accompany Turkey Day festivities. The fun begins with 1934’s Laurel and Hardy classic March of the Wooden Soldiers, as the boys play bumbling toymakers who, with the push of some buttons, manage to save Toyland from the evil Silas Barnaby and the bogeymen. This is followed by a slate of winning holiday comic fare: 1940’s The Shop Around the Corner with James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, and later, Barbara Stanwyck in 1945’s Christmas in Connecticut and the 1957 Tracy/Hepburn favorite Desk Set.
Mary Poppins

Everett Collection
Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) flies out of the windy London skies and into the home of two mischievous children. With the help of a carefree chimney sweep named Bert (Dick Van Dyke), the spirited nanny turns every chore into a game and every day into a “Jolly Holiday.”

Thanksgiving With Carol Burnett
TCM, beginning at 6:30am

Courtesy Everett Collection
In the signature moment from The Carol Burnett Show’s parody of Gone With the Wind, Burnett — as “Starlett O’Hara”— descends a staircase wearing a dress made from curtains, complete with the rod. When Harvey Korman’s “Ratt Butler” approves, she famously replies, “Thank you. I saw it in a window, and I just couldn’t resist it.” Several Burnett Show-parodied films make up this marathon, including the 1953 Joan Crawford musical drama Torch Song, the 1946 Bette Davis melodrama A Stolen Life, 1945’s Mildred Pierce — the send-up for which was called “Mildred Fierce” — and, of course, the 1939 blockbuster Gone With the Wind.

Two for One: Joe Dante
TCM, beginning at 8pm

Everett Collection
In tonight’s Two for One re-airing, TCM primetime host Ben Mankiewicz is joined by director Joe Dante, who introduces two films of his choosing, offering commentary on each title’s cultural significance and influence on other films, behind-the-scenes stories, and his own personal reflections on them. Dante, the man behind Gremlins, The Howling and other fright favorites, recalls seeing tonight’s first film, 1955’s The Night of the Hunter, for the first time during a Saturday matinee when he was 9 years old. “People just remember it their whole lives,” he says of Charles Laughton’s only directing effort, a mighty creepy masterpiece with Robert Mitchum as a serial killer posing as a preacher whose quest to find a hidden $10,000 is subverted by some wily kids. The second half of the director’s double is The Fool Killer, a somewhat forgotten 1965 drama with Anthony Perkins as a traumatized Civil War veteran; the look of the film owes a lot to The Night of the Hunter.

Diane Ladd 90th Birthday Tribute
TCM, beginning at 8pm

New Line Cinema/courtesy Everett Collection
Actress Diane Ladd would have celebratd her 90th birthday this month, but passed away Nov. 3.Tonight TCM remembers her with some of her best work! First up is Martin Scorsese’s 1974 romantic comedy Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, in which Ladd plays Flo, a foulmouthed waitress at the diner where widowed Alice (Ellen Burstyn) works. The role garnered Ladd an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Next up is the 1991 mother-daughter feature Rambling Rose, starring Ladd’s daughter Laura Dern as an orphan who comes to work for a family where Ladd plays the matriarch. The film earned Dern and Ladd Academy Award nominations — it marked the first time a mother-daughter duo was nominated for the same film.
