The Mummy 4 is in the works, and Brendan Fraser just broke his silence on the upcoming film with a bold declaration.

During an interview with Variety published on November 20, the actor behind Rick O’Connell confirmed that he and Rachel Weisz are reuniting 25 years after last starring together. News of the movie broke in early November.

The beloved film series kicked off in 1999 with The Mummy, followed by The Mummy Returns in 2001, both starring Fraser, 56, and Wiesz, 55. For the third movie, however, Wiesz was replaced by Maria Bello in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).

“The one I wanted to make was never made,” Fraser told Variety of the franchise. “The third one was a model of … how can I say this to the AP reporter? NBC had the rights to broadcast the Olympics that year. So they put two together and we went to China.”

He continued, “Working in Shanghai, an incredible experience. I’m proud of the third one because I think it’s a good standalone movie. We picked up and did what we do with a different crew on deck and gave it our best shot. But the one I wanted to make is forthcoming.”

To conclude his thoughts on The Mummy 4, Fraser boldly declared, “I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want.”

During a 2022 interview with Variety while promoting The Whale, Fraser said he was open to doing a fourth Mummy movie.

“I don’t know how it would work,” he admitted. “But I’d be open to it, if someone came up with the right conceit.”

He also shared his opinion on why the 2017 The Mummy movie starring Tom Cruise wasn’t well-received.

“It is hard to make that movie,” he explained. “The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in the new one, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”

Universal is in the process of developing The Mummy 4 with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Although it was confirmed that Fraser and Wiesz will both return, more details about the upcoming film have not been released, as of writing.
