Melrose Place star Grant Show recently made a blunt confession about Season 1 of the ’90s drama series.
On the November 3 episode of the Still Here Hollywood With Steve Kmetko podcast, Show, 63, spoke about the early days of Melrose Place with host, former E! News Live star Steve Kmetko, 72.
Show played Jake Hanson for the first five seasons of the Beverly Hills, 90210 spinoff — but even he admits that Melrose Place took a minute to find its footing.
“Well, the first season was really touch and go,” he shared. “I don’t think any of us felt really confident. We felt pretty good because it was [executive producer] Aaron [Spelling], but our ratings were not very good.”
Show added, “The show wasn’t very good, I don’t think. It was all right. So it was the second season, and it took off and when it did take off, it took off like a rocket.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Kmetko asked Show about who “brought the most spark when the cameras rolled” and who he “enjoyed playing off of” the most.
“Heather [Locklear] was great,” he said of the actress who played Amanda Woodward in Melrose Place. “I mean, Heather just has her own unique style and personality. She really is iconic.”
“I also really enjoyed working with Daphne [Zuniga], of course,” Show added of the actress behind Jo Reynolds, his character’s on-and-off love interest.
He continued, “There was some kismet that happened with that cast. You know, years later, they did a remake of it. And it was like the kids and then the original cast was their parents. And I watched it. They were good actors, there was nothing wrong with them. But whenever their scenes were on, it was kind of dull. And whenever the original cast got together, it sparked again.”
Melrose Place aired for seven seasons from 1992 to 1999. In addition to Show, Locklear, and Zuniga, the drama starred Thomas Calabro, Andrew Shue, Josie Bissett, Doug Savant, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Jack Wagner, Laura Leighton, Marcia Cross, and others.
