Former Vice President Dick Cheney is dead at 84.

On Monday, Nov. 3, the Republican politician died from complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, his family revealed in a statement. “His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed,” they shared, per CNN.

“For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming’s Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States,” the statement continued, per The Associated Press.

The family’s message added: “Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”

Cheney served as Vice President under President George W. Bush for two terms from 2001 to 2009. Additionally, he served as the White House Chief of Staff under President Gerald Ford from 1975 to 1977, a Wyoming Congressman from 1979 to 1989, and the Secretary of Defense under President George H. W. Bush from 1989 to 1993.

As an adult, Cheney suffered from cardiovascular disease for years. He survived multiple heart attacks and underwent a heart transplant in 2012.

In a 2022 ad campaign for his daughter, Rep. Liz Cheney, the former VP spoke out against President Donald Trump.


“In our nation’s 246-year history, there has never been an individual who was a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” Cheney declared. “He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He is a coward.”

Cheney also revealed he was voting for Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential Election.

In addition to his wife and two daughters, Cheney is survived by seven grandchildren.
