Rolling Stones’ member Ronnie Wood recently celebrated his friendship with the late Tina Turner. telling PEOPLE, “I was the only one she’d let visit her dressing room straight after a show. And she’d say, ‘Come here!’ and give me a huge sweaty hug. We stayed friends and she came to watch us on tour in [Europe] shortly before she died [in May 2023].” The Stones and Turned toured together numerous times through the decades.

Years later after they first toured together, Wood settled down, gotten married and had twin daughters. He continued, “[She] couldn’t believe how my life had changed and I’d become a family man. She was a beautiful spirit and I loved her.”

While he was a big fan of Turner, he wasn’t a fan of her ex-husband, the late Ike Turner. Wood said, “I knew Ike, too, but didn’t like him quite as much. I lent him $100 in the ’60s and never got it back.”

Turner and the Rolling Stones toured together in 1966, 1969 and 1981. She also performed with Mick Jagger at the 1985 Philadelphia Live Aid concert at Veterans Stadium when he infamously tore off her skirt while they were performing.

When Turner died in 2023 after a long illness, Wood paid tribute to her then, sharing several photos of the two together over the years. He wrote on X, “🙏💕God bless you Tina, the Queen Of Rock And Soul and a dear friend to our family. Love and prayers to all of Tina’s family, friends and loved ones.”
