When Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid premiered on September 23, 1969, it paired Paul Newman and Robert Redford in what would become one of the most iconic buddy films of all time, and helped redefine what a Western could be. With Redford’s death on September 16, 2025, at the age of 89, fans might wonder who from the cast is still with us today — as it turns out, only one major cast member is still alive.

Katharine Ross was unforgettable as Etta Place, the schoolteacher who loved both Butch and Sundance and joined them on their adventures. Following her breakout in the film, Ross went on to star in The Stepford Wives and The Graduate, cementing her place as one of the most recognizable actresses of the late ’60s and ’70s.

Ross later transitioned to stage work and appeared in smaller projects, while also building a long marriage to actor Sam Elliott. After the recent death of Robert Redford, she is the only surviving main cast member from the iconic film.
