When you think of Donny Osmond, chances are good that bubblegum pop and synchronized dance moves come to mind. But the singer just proved, once again, that he can still surprise his fans. In a recent throwback post on social media, Osmond shared a photo of himself with the members of Metallica, along with a question that got people talking. He wrote, “You’re stranded on a deserted island—you only get to have 10 songs with you. What are your choices? People always give me a funny look when I say one of mine would be ‘Sad But True’ by Metallica!”

That’s right. The wholesome teen idol who crooned “Puppy Love” in the ’70s would take a heavy metal anthem with him into isolation and it’s not just a random pick. Osmond has been a fan of Metallica for decades and even saw them live back in the day.

One fan commented on the post, “Now me and my son have something in common we never knew. My love for Donny Osmond, and my son who also loves Metallica. This made me smile. Great picture.🎼”

“I remember this @Metallica concert well,” he added in another post on X. “It was in Long Beach back in ’86. What I remember most was the musicianship. I don’t recall who was on bass. I think it was Jason Newsted. He was crazy good. Of course, James Hetfield was amazing as well. Ok, the whole band was amazing!”

While hardcore metalheads and Osmond devotees may not often share playlists, this post reminded fans that music is a universal language. Osmond has plenty of other surprises up his sleeve on social media and during his Las Vegas shows, as is evident by his recent addition of a duet with his younger self. He has been singing with an AI-version of his young self during shows and it seems both equally cool and creepy!

Now tell us, what song would you take with you on a deserted island?
