It Was All a Dream? TCM Celebrates Dream-Themed Films
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong look at notable films that have used dream sequences, featured stories that turned out to be only a dream or used other aspects of dreams, daydreams and nightmares onscreen continues tonight. Up first, Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) has a particularly vivid and entertaining (for the audience, at least) dream of a visit to a place somewhere over the rainbow in The Wizard of Oz (1939). After that is another musical fantasy involving a child (Tommy Rettig) dreaming himself into a different realm: The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953), featuring a screenplay cowritten by Dr. Seuss. Next comes the Abbott and Costello comedy Jack and the Beanstalk (1952), followed by three musical romantic comedies: My Dream Is Yours (1949), Du Barry Was a Lady (1943) and Carefree (1938), led by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Steve Martin made the move from stand-up to movie leading man with this 1979 comedy that he cowrote with Carl Gottlieb and Michael Elias, and directed by Carl Reiner. The film, costarring Bernadette Peters, became a hit with audiences (it was the eighth highest-grossing film of the year despite being released in December) and (largely) with critics, and remains a hilarious classic.
