When Is the New Year’s Eve ‘Thin Man’ Marathon Airing on TCM?
Send off 2024 with some mystery — and a few cocktails — on New Year’s Eve, when TCM runs its traditional Thin Man movies marathon. Starting on New Year’s Eve morning, the channel will run all six of the comedic mystery films starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles. The witty, hard-drinking, fun-loving, high-society couple (along with their lovable dog, Asta) often find themselves solving crimes — that is, when they’re not busy engaging in their signature witty repartee or enjoying a stiff drink.
Here’s the film schedule for Tuesday, Dec.31, 2024. All times EST.
9:15 am: The Thin Man (1934)
Since the marathon will show the films in order of their release, we start with the original, in which a recently divorced man, Gilbert Wynant (William Henry), discovers that his new girlfriend has stolen $50,000 from him and is carrying on with other men. Not long afterward, he disappears. Anxious to locate her father, Gilbert’s daughter goes to private detective Nick Charles and his wealthy wife Nora for help.
11am: After the Thin Man (1936)
Nick and Nora are back again in this sequel, where the couple investigates the murder of a jockey and navigates the complex relationships and motives of the victim’s associates and family.
1pm: Another Thin Man (1939)
The sleuthing couple investigates a murder at a wealthy family’s estate, while also caring for their newborn child — talk about multi-tasking!
2:45pm: Shadow of the Thin Man (1941)
Yet more trouble with jockeys! In this film, a jockey has been shot dead at the race track; famous detective Nick Charles and his wife Nora happen to be on the scene. So, naturally, Lt. Abrahams asks for Nick’s expert help in solving the case.
4:30pm: The Thin Man Goes Home (1944)
Nick and Nora return to Nick’s hometown for a restful vacation — which, of course, is interrupted by a murder case. This time, it involves an eccentric inventor and a painted portrait.
6:15pm: Song of the Thin Man (1947)
And, finally, the crime-solving couple investigates the murder of a bandleader aboard a high-society gambling ship who was shot and killed while trying to break into a safe.
If you’re still looking to fill the hours after the ball drops (or the Thin Man isn’t your thing), you still have classic film options!
The MOVIES! Network will be continuing its own New Year’s Eve tradition of offering a toe-tapping marathon of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ classic big-screen pairings.
The network will air The Gay Divorcee (1934) at 11:25am EST, Top Hat (1935) at 1:40pm EST, Shall We Dance (1937) at 3:50pm EST and Carefree (1938) at 6:10pm EST, followed by encores of all four movies.
