Watch All of Cher’s 1975 Christmas Special Right Now, for Free
Iconic pop star Cher took over the Christmas music scene last year with her hit holiday album Christmas, and her smash holiday song “DJ Play a Christmas Song.” And the Christmas fun has continued into this year — Cher has just released the Cher Christmas Special on her official YouTube channel. The special originally aired on December 21, 1975, as part of her solo variety show Cher, which ran from 1975 to 1976.
The show takes viewers on a nostalgic trip down memory lane, as Cher kicks off the special with a dazzling opening musical medley of “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas/We Need a Little Christmas.” She then welcomes her legendary guests, the Lennon Sisters, the Hudson Brothers, Redd Foxx, and her daughter Chastity Bono (now Chaz Bono).
The holiday special is filled with seasonal musical numbers and comic sketches. In one sketch, set in a court, Santa Claus has been arrested, with Cher playing a homemaker who has a complaint and Redd Foxx as the judge. Cher explains to the judge what Santa did as she recites the song “The Night Before Christmas.”
A Christmas Carol gets a Cher twist as her beloved character, Laverne from “Life With Laverne,” is haunted by spirits, portrayed by the Hudson Brothers as her sailor mates. She has these ghosts from her past sing her favorite song, “Popeye the Sailor Man,” and they all reminisce about their good times together — and how they were arrested and picked up by the police!
The Lennon Sisters bring the house down with a fun ’70s holiday original musical medley, dressed in sparkly ’70s outfits. Later, the Sisters and Cher sing two favorite holiday songs by Alfred Burt.
The show’s finale is a retro radio show live at the Snowflake Room, with the Hudson Brothers singing a Christmas mash-up with Redd Foxx, and Cher and the Lennon Sisters singing a fun rendition of “Santa Baby.”
The hour-long musical special is a true treat for Cher fans and is sure to become a holiday favorite for years to come.
