Neil Young Canceled Tour Because He Couldn’t Stomach the Stage Anymore
A few months ago, Neil Young and his band Crazy Horse made the tough decision to cancel their Love Earth tour. The 78-year-old said that his health and age were a huge factor in the decision to nix the tour after taking some time off. He explained that he and a few of the band members got sick after the Detroit show and had to take a break in order to recover. For a while, they had hoped to reschedule the tour, but Young said that his body told him to stop.
“I just woke up one morning on the bus and I said, ‘I can’t do this, I gotta stop,’” he said. “I felt sick when I thought of going on stage. My body was telling me, ‘You gotta stop.’ So I listened to my body.”
He added that he knew the fans were frustrated, but ultimately he had to listen to his body. “Then it gets into all the legal matters,” he continued. “‘You got this, you got that, people bought tickets, they did this, they did that.’ I understand that, but what matters to me is the art of playing, and the music. That’s what matters. That’s what people loved. That’s what they loved to come and see. But if that’s not there, me going isn’t happening. My body told me to not do it.”
Despite canceling the tour, Young is not retiring. He plans to perform at Willie Nelson‘s Farm Aid festival in New York this fall. He said that he hopes one day he feels like he can go back on tour but for now, it seems that fans will remain disappointed.
