Director James Wan is ready to make a splash once again. The director best known for the Aquaman films is reportedly developing a remake of the 1954 classic movie Creature From the Black Lagoon with Universal Pictures. The news comes amid a resurgence of classic monsters for Universal as they gear up for the new theme park Epic Universe, with a land dedicated to monsters we know and love, including Dracula and the Wolf Man.

It has been 70 years since the film first debuted, leaving plenty of room for a modern retelling. Wan promises to pay respect to the original while modernizing the film and adding more horror elements. Wan’s production company Atomic Monster recently merged with Blumhouse, responsible for newer horror hit movies. Wan is also behind the Saw and Conjuring franchises, proving that he knows scary movies.

The original film starred Julie Adams, Richard Denning and Richard Carlson. It followed a prehistoric beast found in the waters of the Amazon jungle. Scientists try to capture the beast to study it, but of course, things go wrong pretty quickly. No word yet on who may star in the remake or when it may come out since it is in the early stages.

This isn’t the first time someone has tried to remake the classic movie. Guillermo del Toro was going to remake the film at one point but it is said that his 2017 film The Shape of Water was heavily inspired by the first movie, which he saw as a child.
