Jessica Lange, a talented actor on the screen and the stage, is sharing her hope that a very special movie she filmed in 2022 will finally be released soon. She reprised her role as Mary Tyrone in the new movie adaptation of Long Day’s Journey Into Night (Katharine Hepburn played the role in the 1962 film). Lange played the part in the 2016 Broadway revival and won her very first Tony award for the role. The new film also stars Ed Harris and Ben Foster.

Lange gave an update and shared, “It’s finally finished. You’ll be able to see it in theaters. It was a project that we all loved and were passionate about, but the money was never fully there so it was always scraping together a little bit here, a little bit there. And I think now, maybe, we finally have finished it. Hopefully!”

The movie was filmed in Wicklow, Ireland and was reportedly shut down just a day after filming began. The lead producer Gabrielle Tana had to figure out how to get money to keep the project going after realizing that financing fell through. Lange said that the cast never doubted that the movie would get made and used the downtime to bond. She explained, “We just hung in, went to the pub, took long walks. We really became friends and cared deeply for one another, because we were going through the same thing. I think that in some way it added to our intensity and passion for doing this.”

The Great Lillian Hall

Warner Bros./HBO

Not only that, but Lange stars in the new film The Great Lillian Hall, which was recently acquired by HBO and will stream on HBO and Max on May 31, 2024. The logline of the movie reads, “As beloved Broadway star Lillian Hall (Lange) pours her heart, soul, and time into preparing for her next big role, she finds herself blindsided by confusion and forgetfulness. Battling against all odds to make it to opening night, while holding on to her fading memories and identity, she must navigate a tumultuous emotional journey – balancing her desire for the spotlight and the stark demands of the real world.” The film also stars Kathy Bates, Pierce Brosnan, Jesse Williams and Lily Rabe.

In addition to the new films, Lange may be able to add another Tony to her shelf. Lange currently stars in the Broadway show Mother Play as a single mother. The audience follows her journey of raising two children on her own throughout the decades. Her adult children are played by Jim Parsons and Celia Keenan-Bolger. The show has been nominated for four Tony Awards including Best Play. Lange, Parsons and Keenan-Bolger are all nominated in separate categories as well. The Tony Awards will take place this year on June 16, 2024.
