May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and as part of that celebration, Turner Classic Movies is recognizing famed Japanese actor Sessue Hayakawa as its May 2024 Star of the Month. (See below for the free download of the schedule). Born Kintarō Hayakawa in Japan’s Chiba Prefecture in 1886, Hayakawa became one of the highest-paid stars of the silent movie era. This period marked the peak of the actor’s career, though he did continue his screen presence in the era of “talkies” with success.

You’ll see Hayakawa films from both eras on TCM this month, starting with three silent titles on May 6, including The Cheat (1915), the film that made Hayakawa a star, and the network premiere of the thriller The Tong Man (1919).

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Monday celebration of famed Japanese actor Sessue Hayakawa continues May 13 with three of the films that the star made during the sound era, mostly in supporting but still memorable roles following his days as a major silent movie idol. Up first is Tokyo Joe (1949), a film noir set in postwar Japan and led by Humphrey Bogart. After that is The Geisha Boy (1958), a comedy set in Japan starring Jerry Lewis, and also with Marie McDonald and Suzanne Pleshette in her film debut. Finally, watch Hayakawa’s first talkie, Daughter of the Dragon (1931), a mystery thriller headlined by Anna May Wong and also featuring Warner Oland (wearing “yellowface”) as Fu Manchu.

Three of the films that the star made during the sound era, mostly in supporting but still memorable roles following his days as a major silent movie idol are part of the May 20 lineup of fils. Leading things off is the Tokyo-set film noir House of Bambo (1955), cowritten and directed by Samuel Fuller, and starring Robert Ryan, Robert Stack and Shirley Yamaguchi. Next is the adventure/romance Green Mansions (1959), led by Audrey Hepburn and Anthony Perkins. The lineup concludes with the World War II drama Hell to Eternity (1960), with Hayakawa playing a Japanese commander during the Battle of Saipan. Jeffrey Hunter, David Janssen, Vic Damone and Patricia Owens lead the cast.

TCM’s Memorial Day lineup will cross over with the final installment of its monthlong Monday celebration of famed Japanese actor Sessue Hayakawa and feature two of the star’s later films, both set during World War II: Three Came Home (1950) and The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), for which Hayakawa received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his role as Col. Saito. Following these titles, TCM’s marathon concludes with Assignment in Brittany (1943) and Sergeant York (1941).
