Disney+ has announced that X-Men ’97, Marvel Animation’s revival of the beloved 1992-97 Fox Kids programming block staple X-Men: The Animated Series, will begin streaming its 10 episodes on the service Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

Picking up where X-Men: The Animated Series ended, X-Men ’97 is Marvel‘s first X-Men project since the company regained film and television rights to these characters (who were previously featured in a number of movies produced by Fox).

Also revealed with the premiere date was this teaser poster for the show:

The title treatment for the show, and nine headshots of X-Men characters, are depicted on the sides of VHS tape covers standing upright in a bookshelf. Above these reads the text: "New Episodes. New Era." At the bottom is the Disney+ logo and series premiere date: March 20.

And a trailer:

As you can tell from the art style and animation, X-Men ’97 does embrace its ’90s roots while also looking certainly more polished than many of the animated programs from back in that era.

That ’90s ethos applies to not only the show’s animation and art style, but also to some of the its casting; the new series will feature a number of voice actors from the original, including Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler and Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm.

New voices come from Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, JP Karliak as Morph, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop and Matthew Waterson as Magneto.

There aren’t too many story details for X-Men ’97 at this point, or indications as to whether the show will be episodic or serialized.

Disney+ offers this description: “X-Men ’97 revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as the X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.”

We’ll see what that future holds for our favorite mutants when X-Men ’97 begins streaming on Disney+ Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
