Just 12 days after her 47th birthday, Judy Garland died of an accidental overdose in her London apartment on June 22, 1969. Legions of fans took to the hot streets and held vigils to honor the beloved Garland when she was laid to rest on June 27.

The achingly sensitive actress and singer is best remembered for her role as Dorothy in 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, as well as musicals like 1944’s Meet Me in St. Louis and her own 1954 version of A Star Is Born. Garland was also a brilliant dramatic actress, too, as she proved  in the wartime romance The Clock (1945) and the searing, all-star drama Judgment at Nuremberg (1961).

While her death marked the end of a long struggle with depression and alcohol, hopefully it was the beginning of a peaceful life eternal. Today, Garland’s roles in film and TV continue to be enjoyed and her career truly celebrated. Here we look back at the talented actress and singer in the photos below.
