Since 1978, with the exception of the pandemic, The Kennedy Center Honors happen each year to honor those in performing arts for their contributions to American culture. Five honorees are chosen are generally individuals. However, couples, musical groups, musicals, or television shows have been honored in the past.

A special host is chosen each year to kick off the event, which is televised after the holidays.
