Original ‘Power Rangers’ Return in New Movie

power rangers returns

The original cast of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is back! To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1993 series, Netflix is releasing a new film called Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always on April 19. The special film features the Blue Ranger Billy Cranston (David Yost – his first appearance back as a Power Ranger in decades), the first Black Ranger Zack Taylor (Walter E. Jones), the second Pink Ranger (Catherine Sutherland), the second Red Ranger (Steve Cardenas), the second Yellow Ranger (Karan Ashley), and the second Black Ranger (Johnny Yong Bosch), and Barbara Goodson, the voice of villain Rita Repulsa.

The Rangers will once again reunite to fight Rita Replusa, who killed Trini, the original Yellow Ranger. The logline reads, “Thirty years after the wise and powerful Zordon formed the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the team comes face to face with a familiar threat from the past. In the midst of a global crisis, they are called on once again to be the heroes the world needs. This 30th anniversary special is inspired by the legendary mantra from the franchise ‘Once a Ranger, Always a Ranger,’ meaning once you become part of the Ranger family, you are always welcome back.”

The ’93 series spawned a movie in 1995 and many, many spinoffs over the years. The Power Rangers were truly a ’90s phenomenon that never really died off. Fans flocked to the comments section of the trailer when the news broke, opening up about what the Power Rangers have meant to them over the years.

One person wrote, “The freaking nostalgia hit me like a ton of bricks! Not gonna lie this made me tear up, especially seeing the original actors and hearing the theme song again! I’m sad that kids today will never know the pure joy of growing up as a kid in the ’90s and experiencing Saturday morning and after school cartoons and TV shows! Those were simpler times back then. Man how time flies.”

Unfortunately, there are several stars who won’t be appearing in the new film for obvious reasons. Fans were heartbroken when Jason David Frank, who played Tommy Oliver —the Green Ranger turned White Ranger — died of suicide in November 2022 at just 49 years old. Thuy Trang, who played Trini (the original Yellow Ranger) died in 2001 after a car accident. She was only 27. To further pay tribute to these beloved actors, a new character named Minh will appear in the film. Minh is Trini’s daughter, who is looking for revenge and will help the Power Rangers fight Rita Repulsa.
