Mark Hamill Reacts to Finally Meeting His ‘Star Wars’ Mother Natalie Portman

The 2024 Golden Globes Awards were very exciting for two Star Wars actors. Despite playing mother and son in the franchise, Mark Hamill and Natalie Portman had never met before the Golden Globes this year. Hamill played Luke Skywalker in the franchise while Portman played Luke’s mother Padmé Amidala in all three of the Star Wars prequel movies.
Of course, Star Wars fans know that the two characters never met in the films as adults because Padmé passed away while giving birth to twins Luke and Leia Skywalker. [Spoiler alert!] She died in the 2005 film Revenge of the Sith. Hamill went on to appear in many of the Star Wars films.

During the award show on Sunday night, they ran into each other unexpectedly backstage. Portman was nominated for her role in the film May December while Hamill was there to present the brand-new award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, which went to the Barbie movie. Hamill shared a photo they took on social media and wrote, “Now I have finally met my ‘mother,’ thanks to the @goldenglobes.”

Both were all smiles in the photo and fans absolutely ate it up and re-shared the snap over 55,000 times at the time of posting. It was back in 2018 that Portman extended an invitation to Hamill to meet up when she appeared on Stephen Colbert‘s late-night show. She said at the time, “It’s such a shame! I would love to meet him. Mark, I would love to meet you. Come over!”

In another interview, Hamill joked about the casting decision. He said, “When I saw that Natalie Portman was my mother, I thought holy moly. A woman that beautiful has a kid that looks like this? I’m not buying it. I should look way more handsome.” Maybe now the pair will hang out and post some more photos for their fans!
