’90s Show ‘Northern Exposure’ Streaming for the First Time
If you are a fan of the 1990s show Northern Exposure, we have some amazing news for you! The show has been quietly uploaded to Amazon Prime Video, making its debut on a streaming service. While it has been available on DVD and Blu-ray, the harsh truth is that people don’t always own DVD players anymore and streaming is now more popular. The show followed Rob Morrow as New York City physician Joel Fleischman who moves to a fictional town called Cicely, Alaska after his medical school loan agreement said he had to move there.
The start of the series focuses on his experience learning to settle into Alaska, a very different climate and culture from what he’s known. The show ran for six seasons and in the later seasons, focused on the citizens of the town including the ex-con radio DJ and his radio show Chris in the Morning. The show was a hit in the ’90s and won many awards including an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. These days, you might call it a “dramedy,” for its perfect mix of dramatic elements and comedic quips.
Northern Exposure was created by Joshua Brand and John Falsey who also worked on shows such as St. Elsewhere. In addition to Morrow, the cast includes Barry Corbin, Janine Turner, John Cullum, Cynthia Geary, Peg Phillips, Elaine Miles, Darren E. Burrows, and John Corbett. Morrow left the show after season 5 and was replaced by Paul Provenza, who played Dr. Phil Capra in the final season. Teri Polo played his wife, Michelle.
There has been some talk about rebooting the show in recent years, more specifically in 2018. However, nothing has yet materialized, so for now, fans can just re-watch the classic instead. Who is your favorite character in Northern Exposure? Let us know in the comments!
