Last night, The Masked Singer had a double elimination and John Oates was revealed to be the Anteater, while Keyshia Cole was revealed to be the Candelabra. Oates was unmasked first after none of the panelists could guess who he was. He admitted that he chose an Anteater costume to pay tribute to his hit song “Maneater.”

In a new interview, he also opened up about why he decided to go on The Masked Singer, his feud with former bandmate Daryl Hall, and his brand-new single coming out tomorrow. The singer-songwriter revealed that he decided to say yes to Masked Singer because he thought it would be fun to try something new after decades of releasing music and touring.

He said, “So it worked, and I thought it would be a great way for me to do something different where I could sing and not have my voice and my personality connected to my past, which I’m really at this point now in my life, I’m really making an effort to kind of leave my past in the past and move forward. I’ve got a lot of good things that are happening and I want to do that.” He also shared that it was really “flattering” to be compared to some great vocalists like Billy Joel and Bob Seger.

Of course, he was asked about his feud with Hall, since there is a current lawsuit going on right now. Although there is very little public knowledge about the lawsuit, Hall reportedly filed a restraining order against Oates and cited some creative differences for their issues. When asked if he could ever see himself patching things up and performing with Hall again, Oates, said, “Oh, you know what, I never say never to anything. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I just want, right now, I’m focused on where I am in life and leading the best life I can and moving forward.”

Although Hall & Oates is up in the air, Oates is continuing his solo career. He is releasing a new single on December 15 called “Get your Smile On.” All of the proceeds from the song downloads will go to the charity Teen Cancer America. He shared that he and his wife do a lot of philanthropic work, especially for Teen Cancer America and men’s health. He added about the new song, “The cool thing about it is it’s a song that I actually recorded at home on my laptop that I played all the instruments and sang all the vocals and never went into a recording studio with it. It comes straight from my computer, right to your ears. So I’d never done that before. So it’s different that way.” Be sure to check it out tomorrow!
