Avant began his impressive career in the ’60s as a nightclub manager, managing people like Lalo Schifrin and Jimmy Smith. He found two record labels and many years later became the chairman on the board of Motown Records and the first African-American board member at PolyGram. He helped broker the sale of the legendary Stax Records back in the late ’60s. His love of music also helped launch one of the first fully black-owned radio stations. When he wasn’t working in music, he certainly kept himself busy. He was a mentor for many stars including Babyface, Bill Withers, Sylvia Rhone, and even NFL star Jim Brown.

In the ’80s, he worked with stars such as Michael Jackson, helping him promote his first solo tour. It seems he had a hand in everything, even politics and sports. He helped secure a special on ABC for Muhammad Ali and negotiated a huge deal for MLB star Hank Aaron. No wonder he was often called the “Black Godfather.” In fact, in 2019, a film called The Black Godfather came out sharing his incredible life story. Avant was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and received an Industry Icon Award at the Grammys.

In his personal life, he married Jacqueline Gray in 1967 and they remained together until her death in 2021. She was sadly murdered during a home invasion. They had two children together, Nicole and Alex, who now both work in the business as well. May he rest in peace.
