What To Know

  • Amy Yasbeck reunited with her former Wings castmates at the John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health’s annual benefit to honor her late husband, John Ritter.
  • Tim Daly, Steven Weber, Tony Shalhoub, and writer Steven Levitan joined Yasbeck.
  • The event celebrated Ritter’s legacy and the foundation’s mission to raise awareness and funds.

In September, Amy Yasbeck reunited with her former Wings costars to honor her late husband, John Ritter, at the annual John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health’s “Evening from the Heart LA” benefit. Yasbeck played Casey Chapel Davenport on the beloved sitcom.

Wings cast members Tim Daly, Steven Weber, and Tony Shalhoub, along with writer Steven Levitan joined Yasbeck onstage for a walk down memory lane, recalling the NBC half-hour series that ran from 1990-97.

“I’ve been wanting to get these guys together for a long time,” Yasbeck told TV Weekly on the event’s purple carpet. Wings was set on the island of Nantucket at a one-plane commuter service terminal. Getting the Wings gang back together, ironically, involved some air travel.

“Steve lives in Los Angeles, but he works in Chicago [on Chicago Med],” Yasbeck said. “I thought, ‘If only we could pry Tony Shalhoub out of Manhattan, and we did!’ Also, Tim is doing a show here in L.A., Newlyweds, with his wife, Téa Leoni.” (Newlyweds premieres on Friday, October 23, on NBC.)

“I just love these guys,” Daly said. “We spent years together every freaking day, and we got to know each other really well, every wrinkle, smell, and quirk. Then, you’re apart for years, and when you come back together, it’s like the next day. Tony and I just started talking like no time had passed.”

On September 11, 2003, Ritter was rushed to the hospital while rehearsing his sitcom 8 Simple Rules. Initially, he was thought to be having a heart attack. In truth, he suffered a fatal acute thoracic aortic dissection, which led to Yasbeck establishing the foundation.

“[Amy’s] a hero, really,” said Shalhoub. “She channeled her grief when John died, which was serious and severe at the time, turning it into [this foundation], trying to raise awareness and funds for research so that this doesn’t happen to other people.”

While Ritter is known most for his Emmy-winning performance as Jack Tripper on Three’s Company, he also appeared as Stuart Davenport (Casey’s ex-husband) in a 1996 episode of Wings.

“I was excited for John to meet [the Wings cast],” Yasbeck recalled. “I don’t think people could truly wrap their brains around [what he was like] unless they were around him. You might think that a person can’t be that funny, cool, sweet and genuine — and then you’d be like, ‘Oh, he is.’”

Yasbeck said that Ritter told her when he was doing Three’s Company, he would call to mind iconic cartoon character Bugs Bunny and he would dive into the show’s scenarios. “John would literally throw himself into stuff,” Yasbeck says with a smile.
